Course Description:  This course requires the participant to read and understand Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) 33: “Treatment for Stimulant Use Disorders”. This updated TIP reviews what is known about treating the medical, psychiatric, and SUD-related problems associated with the use of cocaine and methamphetamine, as well as the misuse of prescription stimulants. The TIP offers recommendations on treatment approaches and maximizing treatment engagement and retention, and strategies for initiating and maintaining abstinence.  Learn how SUD treatment providers can use the latest evidence on motivation-enhancing approaches and strategies to increase participation and retention in SUD treatment.


This course is intended to familiarize drug and alcohol treatment service providers, mental health service providers, peer recovery support specialists, behavioral health program managers, directors, and administrators, clinical supervisors, and healthcare providers with guidelines for clinical providers to enhance motivation for change in substance use disorder.


Course Objectives:

  • To advance the understanding of treating the SUDs associated with the use of cocaine and the misuse of prescription stimulants. 
  • To be familiar with  stimulant use disorders and trends in stimulant use in the United States.
  • Lean how stimulants affect the brain and behavior 
  • Be able to describe medical and psychological signs, symptoms, and complications associated with stimulant use and stimulant use disorders and how to best manage common complications. 
  • Become familiar with supported nonpharmacologic approaches to helping patients begin and sustain recovery from stimulant use disorders. 
  • To be able to summarize  techniques clinicians can use to help engage patients in SUD treatment and maximize their chances of sustaining long-term recovery. 
  • To be able to recognize treatment considerations for Special Populations
