Participants will begin by exploring important issues such as: how masculinity shapes men’s attitudes, beliefs and behaviors; how culture affects definitions of masculinity; and how masculine roles may hinder some men from seeking needed treatment for behavioral health concerns.
Next, Participants will learn some basic differences between men and women patterns of substance use/abuse. Additionally, Participants will consider the unique difficulties men may present for screening and assessment.
Also, Participants will become familiar with the treatment issues involved when working with men. Next, Participants will be able to identify the treatment issues involved when working with specific populations of men.
Finally, Participants will consider the available treatment modalities and settings.
This course is intended to familiarize mental health professionals, social workers, substance abuse professionals, child welfare workers, healthcare professionals, psychologists, or certified addiction specialists, with the specific behavioral health treatment needs of men with substance use disorders (SUDs).
